dance first, think later…

It’s a euphoric feeling, where I don’t need to think or talk and it’s just all about the movement I create.

When life is difficult you can only do what you can; ‘Dance first, think later. It’s the natural order’. A thoughtful collaboration shared by both designers, Alice Philipson and Amber Phillips.

The words, ‘Dance first, think later. It’s the natural order’ are implied from the play Waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett. Along the bottom of the poster, an extract from Act 1 is written in Courier font 12-point size, the standard for most screenplay scripts.

'Waiting for Godot' is often used by people to describe a situation where they are waiting for something to happen, but it probably never will. This project was imagined during the first year of the global COVID pandemic; with mental health at the forefront of everyones’ minds, and an underlying sense of uncertainty, Waiting for Godot seemed fitting. The phrase ‘dance first, think later’ reminds us to just be in the moment.

Illustrated in this print is Jacob Phillips, brother to Amber. The fluidity of Jacob’s movement informs the direction of Amber’s pen work.
